3. Impact and drops
Consoles that get knocked over — especially while plugged in — can crack the internal pads of the HDMI IC (the chip behind the port) even when the port itself looks fine externally.
How to Tell If It's the Port
Symptoms of an HDMI port failure on PS5:
- Black screen but the fan spins and the light comes on
- Signal drops in and out when you wiggle the cable

Some shops love this fix because it's fast, requires less skill, and looks like it worked when you pick up the console.
We don't offer it as a primary repair. Here's why:
- The underlying HDMI IC may still be damaged. The adapter can mask this temporarily, but signal issues often recur within weeks.
- The mechanical mount is weaker than a real soldered port. A cable snag will just break the adapter next time.
- The video quality at 4K/120Hz can degrade if the adapter isn't well-shielded.
- Most importantly, it's not a repair, it's a workaround. We've had customers bring in PS5s with failed adapter boards from other shops — the customer paid twice.
What a Real PS5 HDMI Repair Looks Like
A proper HDMI port replacement is a board-level micro-soldering job. Here's the actual process:
- Full teardown — the PS5 has to come apart down to the motherboard.
- Port removal — the old HDMI port is desoldered using hot air and precision tips. Shielding tabs are lifted without lifting the pads.
- Pad inspection — every solder pad is checked under magnification. If pads are lifted or the HDMI IC underneath is damaged, that gets called out before proceeding.
- New port installation — a new OEM-grade port is soldered in place with fresh solder paste and reflowed properly.
