5. Do not blow dry it. Heat can warp internal components and push moisture further in rather than out.
6. Do not use compressed air aggressively into ports. It can force water past seals into places it wasn't before.
7. Put it in a dry bag or container. Not rice. Just dry and untouched.
8. Get it to a repair shop within 24 hours. This is the step that actually matters most.

Myths That Make Water Damage Worse

Myth: rice absorbs the moisture. Rice is barely absorbent compared to actual desiccant, and it does nothing about the corrosion that starts on circuit boards within hours. Dust and starch from rice can also get into your ports.

Myth: if it turns on, it's fine. Powering on a wet phone can short components that would have survived if left off. A phone that boots up fine on day one can be corroded and dead by day five if the water wasn't fully removed and cleaned from the board.

Myth: waiting a couple days won't hurt. It absolutely will. Corrosion is a chemical reaction that accelerates with time, especially with anything other than pure water: pool chlorine, salt water, coffee, soda. Sugar and salt are conductive and dramatically speed up board damage.

The Corrosion Timeline: Why Speed Matters

Here's what's actually happening inside your phone after water exposure:

• Hour 1-6: Moisture sits on the board. Minimal damage if the phone stays powered off.
• Day 1: Oxidation begins on exposed metal contacts and solder points.
• Day 2-3: Corrosion spreads across circuit pathways. Some connections start failing intermittently.
• Day 4-7: Corrosion has often reached critical components. Motherboard damage becomes severe and sometimes unrecoverable.
• Week 2+: In many cases, the board is a total loss. What could have been a $90-$150 cleaning is now a full motherboard replacement or the phone is dead for good.

• Toilet water: Not more electrically damaging than tap water, but get it cleaned professionally rather than just wiped down.
